Neo-Traditional Tattooing

Tattooing is a diverse art-form, the limitations became less and less as time goes on and there are constantly new and exciting styles and artist’s emerging all over the world. Something that has developed and gained momentum very quickly over the past 5 or so years is neo-traditional tattooing. Neo-Traditional work has its foundations in traditional and old-school styles of work, but is modernized and adapted to the present capabilities of artists and their tools, higher detail, a more versatile palette, and a wider variety of subject matter,neo-traditional tattooing is a true sign of the evolution of tattooing and its adaptation to new and innovative methods of applying tattoo’s.

While the subject matter is broad and seemingly endless, it is always important to consider the working style of the artist you approach with this sort of work, some artists may be more effeminate than others in style, some may have more limited palettes that suit the tone of their work, others may be capable of doing virtually anything! It is worth looking around to find the perfect artist to take care of your tattoo’s for you.

The work more than often not relies on bold line-work and varied line-weight, defined and solid images that are crisp and accurate, complimented by strong textures created through colour or shading. Black and grey or colour works are both easily executed, and again this can depend on the working style of the artist.

Our primary neo-traditional artists at Modern Ink are Jazzy, and Jaes (although he does tend to work in more old-school and folk-art styles generally.) Both of these expert artists are adaptable and proficient talents who are constantly on the hunt for exciting new pieces they can take on, if you have an idea, we have time to put it on your skin. Contact the studio for any further information on neo-traditional tattooing or anything else for that matter, we love it all!

Hyper-Realism Tattooing

This week we are taking a look at realism! Tattoo’s so crisp and realistic that they look like photos. There are artists around the world who have become internationally famous for executing flawless realism, it is difficult to achieve and requires years of practice and hard-work to attain. Our artists are constantly pushing themselves in the studio to improve, and hyper-realism work can be one of the most challenging style’s they can tackle.

Fortunately, this style of work is another versatile and broad type that can contain an enormous variety of subject matter. Landmarks, objects, animals, portraiture, anything that exists and even things that don’t can be tattooed to seem as real as that which we look at with our own eyes each day. Black-and-grey or colour work are both viable for these pieces and either can create distinctive and unique tattoo's.

Our primary realism artist Kris has been working in this style for over 10 years and has travelled the world with his detailed and expertly-performed work. He is willing to tackle any idea, and is constantly pushing his own boundaries to see what he can create. He has taken awards at international tattoo conventions for his work and continues to wow us in-studio every week with his newest works.

Dotwork and Geometry.

Another trending style of tattooing is the geometric and dotwork tattoos. Combining tessellated patterns and geometric shapes with shading compiled of hundreds of tiny dots, these pieces are executed with precision and are bound to impress.

Piece of geometric dotwork by resident artist Allan Tuul @DotWorkLove.

While this style can either be incredibly symmetrical or abstract in its design, the style of shading always creates dimension and texture that is difficult to achieve. We are fortunate enough to have multiple artists who enjoy working in this style, in particular Allan and Sanni who both handle a lot of this work as their specialties.

The pieces can be simple black and grey, or can have colour implemented into them, and can often be complimented with watercolour techniques, accentuating the shading of the dots and accompanying the design’s abstract feel.

More and more over time we are seeing mandalas, geometry, and tessellated patterns coming out from artists all over the world who are executing new and unique designs daily, this is a style of work that can be as extravagant or as minimalistic as you want, meaning it offers tattooing to virtually anyone, even those only looking for smaller pieces or their first tattoo to test the water, so to speak.

Maybe this is the style you’ve been looking for! If you want to discuss it more or meet up with one of our artists to see some more of their work or designs, don’t hesitate to contact us at the studio or pop your head in to say hi, we are always looking for new friends to tattoo!

Watercolour tattoo.

Something that we have seen growing in popularity over the past few months at the studio is watercolour work. Simple or sketchy line-works with splashes of vibrant colours can create unique and individualised tattoos that are either great as a stand-alone or even to bigger scales, entire sleeves of this style can really catch the eye and give you something distinctive to be really be proud to wear!

Watercolour skull and headdress by Jaes Bidwell.

Because this work relies primarily on the colours and their dispersion, almost anything can be transformed into a distinctive and bright tattoo, the only limit on this is your own imagination! Particular motifs such as flowers and animals, symbology, or even abstract sketches all offer great opportunities to play with colour and arrangement, and can often take what could be quite a generic tattoo and make it something really special.

While our artists can vary in style, each of them is capable of employing this colour method to their work and are always more than open to our client’s ideas and concepts, all you need to do is contact the studio and we can arrange for you to have a talk and get stuck into your next favourite tattoo!
